Who is better in medical translation? A linguist or a medical doctor or another person with medical background?
There is a lot of discussion of the importance of technical specialization and actual background for the field a translator works in. For this reason we decided to run a study to compare the quality of medical translation done by linguists and medical doctors/translators with medical backgrounds. And we named this study QMT-project (Quality of Medical Translation).
This study includes two phases: 1) blind review of translation samples done by translators with and without medical background to to evaluate the quality of translation, and 2) survey and interview of medical translation experts on quality of medical translation done by translators with and without medical background. The study is run by Yana Onikiychuk, Ekaterina Chashnikova, Pablo Muguerza and Artem Karateev.
